Please post in this blog three important tasks that you will be have to do someday in your chosen profession. What are the tasks and more specifically, what are the communication skills necessary to effectively perform these tasks. You must post by our next class on Wednesday, Sept 15th. I expected at least 150 words here.
I have been working for 3 years in outside sales for an eyewear company. After many seminars, trade shows, and training on product knowledge, I have grown an interest on the other side of the industry. The development and production of the brand and not just the selling aspect of it. As a Director of Brands, I will have the task of developing the target product and the overall pre-launch marketing activities. I will have to know brand strategy and development, how it works and who to target. I will also be in charge of lead discussions on the focus points of the brand, as well as management issues. Communication plays a huge role in this. It plays a tremendous impact on your listening how you deliver your message, the knowledge you have behind the product and the passion you bring to the table. I will be succesful as a Director of brands because of my expertise and passion on eyewear and my outside sales experience. Educating myself on speaking on a professional level will enhance my abilities to do my job effectively. Although I now enjoy building personal one on one relationships with the clients in my territory I want to achieve my career on an exectutive level. Educating myself and learning communications skills will make me confident in my public speaking.
ReplyDeleteI have been in the United States almost 10 years and I am still improving my English along with my accent. I know I have to work even harder on my correct grammar. In the future if I want to be a teacher or work in educational field, I have to master those skills. I want my English to be sophisticated. The things I always do in Polish are count, curse, pray, and sing and probably never change. My second task to improve is communication. It is not always easy to talk in front of a class or group of people and lecture them. As a teacher or any kind manager, I want to deliver the information in professional way. The connection is my next skill I have to improve. I would like to be outstanding messenger. It is a very difficult to feel the audience and interact with them. I hope after my Communication class those skills will develop and I will achieve my career goal an executive level. I will experience more confident about myself.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Glenn Puzino. I have worked as a Master Automobile Technician since I was 18 years old. I received my Associates' Degree in Automotive Engineering in 2003. After obtaining the level of assistant shop foreman, I had decided that the end of the road had virtually been reached and it was time to move on. I am now a Junior Accounting Major at Kean University.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the analytical nature of accounting as well as the attention to detail required. As a beginning investor, I am also interested in gaining higher skills in deciphering corporations' financial statements.
My name is Danielle Rosano. I have my Assoicates' Degree from Brookdale Community College where I studied Elementary Education. After, I transferred to Rowan University where I continued to study Elementary Ed. Last Summer I decided to switch my major to Business Management. Fall of 2009, I decided not to go back to Rowan and take some classes at Ocean County College. Spring 2010 I had returned to Rowan to figure out it wasn't for me so I decided to transfer to Kean University.
ReplyDeleteI am a Junior studying business management. I am interested in getting better at my communication skills and hopefully work my way up in a major business company.
Hello! My name is Kerry Bielawne. I'm a full time student enrolled in the Kean @ Ocean program. I've been working at Shoprite for 5 years as a cashier. Since I've been with Shoprite for so long I realize how important it is to receive a good education.
ReplyDeleteI graduated Ocean County College two semesters ago with a liberal arts degree. Now my studies are focused towards a degree in management, hopefully landing a position in a Human Resource department
I'm excited to hopefully graduate school in two years and work in a corporation that appreciates what I have to offer.
My Name is Kristin Donato. I work at A real estate agency as an assistant and I waitress on the side. I received my associates degree from OCC in 2009 and I am a business management major. I am not sure exactly what I want to do with my degree, but to open up my own business one day would be nice.
ReplyDeleteI really have to work hard in order to graduate by next year, and that is my goal. Finishing up college and the Kean @ Ocean Program is a bit "bitter-sweet" for me however, accomplishing another goal feels so good and I am looking forward to it.
Hello my name is Sean Johnston and I'm a junior at Kean. I'm working on getting my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management with a minor in Marketing. I was formerly an Account Manager for a company called Hilti which specializes in selling construction materials and equipment but recently left the company to pursue other opportunities.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking this paticular course because it's a requirement but also because I believe being effective as a manager requires the ability to clearly convey information to those around you.
Working in the sense of having a job regardless of chosen profession entails the use of communication skills to be successful. At one time in my life I was working simultaneously as a waiter, and personal trainer. Waiting tables and communication go hand and hand, and while the initial mode of communication maybe of an impersonal nature, it becomes the job of a waiter (in American society) to receive the verbal and non-verbal messages given by the sender (in this situation the table), and through the practice of service leadership turn the communication mode from an impersonal experience to an interpersonal one. The same principal applies when training a client. Initial clients are often apprehensive when engaging in a training program, especially if the person who is training the trainee conducts training sessions using a communication mode that is impersonal. Service leadership also applies to the field of training, through treating your client in an altruistic manner, and genuinely being interested in helping the client achieve their fitness goals the trainer develops a level of communication that is no longer impersonal but rather has become interpersonal.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I came to find through performing in both professions was that the “task” and “communication skills” most required center on ones abilities to change that initial impersonal meeting to an interpersonal communication enjoyed by mutual senders/receivers. Establishing one’s self as an experienced professional functions best when one utilizes communication skills in hopes of furthering an informed, altruistic, professional message. Regardless of profession, one can always become more aware of verbal and non-verbal messages by receiving verbal and non-verbal messages, and adapting a style that makes uses of service leadership to further an informed sympathetic message. The skill of using service leadership from personal experience works wonders when communicating and can be applied to any profession that requires communication.
My name is Tessy and my major is marketing. In the future, I would like to work in the public relations department for a corporation. Three important tasks that I will have to carry out working in public relations are maintaining a favorable image for my company, communicating with the pubic and organizing events to improve relationships.
ReplyDeleteMaintaining a positive image, communicating with the public and other companies, and organizing events for my company cannot be carried out successfully without communications skills. In order to accomplish these tasks, I need to convey my message clearly to the customers, employees and the general public. With increasing competition, good public relations are important for the company’s success in the field. If any issue that could give my company a negative image were to occur, I need to be ready to communicate in a timely manner, so that an explanation or apology can be given.
Possessing experience in professional communications will enhance my public speaking skills and therefore improve my confidence.
I have been a manager of at least one tanning salon for the past three years. In the future, I hope to actually take over at least one of my boss’s tanning salons or someday open a few of my own salons. The duties that I would be doing would be the hiring, firing & interviewing processes, maintaining employees good work ethic as well as running a successful business while making customers feel happy and comfortable. To make these tasks successful I need to have immaculate communication skills. To do the hiring, firing and interviewing, I need to develop interviewing skills and what proper questions to ask and when to ask them. The hiring process is the biggest decision, because that person I am hiring will be someone portraying my salons image to the society. The firing process also takes excellent communication skills because you need to say the right things to that employee so that they understand why they are getting fired, and hopefully they’re wont be any hard feelings. I have already been maintaining employees and creating tasks for them to do while working and by doing that I need leadership skills, management skills and fantastic communication to great a positive and joyful environment. The most important communication skills that I believe I need to make my salon successful would be working with the customers and making them have the best impression of my salon. I am going to need to perfect my communication skills so that I can talk to customers and deal with any situations in a calm and professional manner.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Lynne Schmidinger and I am in my fifth year at Kean University in Union, NJ. I am a public communications major and it is my goal to work with radio at a country radio station. Although I've taken many classes that have involved public speaking, I am aware that there is always room for improvement and I want to become the best public speaker that I possibly can. I also have an interest in the public relations field, also involving country music. For the past four years I have been working as a waitress which, in my opinion, has definitely helped me in the communications field because I am constantly talking to people I do not know. I have also taken acting classes and was involved in the theater department at my high school for four years whether it be behind the scenes or on stage. It has been a lot easier for me to perform and talk on stage than in front of a classroom, however, I have improved a great deal because I have taken about thirty six credits in communications and every class has involved public speaking in some way. It is my main goal to be successful in what ever career I end up with whether I obtain my goal of being involved with the country music industry or not. The more practice I get speaking in front of classrooms or different settings, the more comfortable I will become and it is my goal to do as well as possible before entering the "real world."
ReplyDeleteI have been a college student now for the past 6 years and it honestly does not look like I will be finishing up anytime soon. My degree is in management, so when it comes to choosing a profession the direction I have been given is vague at best and leaves me with a lot of uncertainty. However, I would consider myself a career student, because even after I finish my bachelors with Kean I have no intentions of finishing school. That makes the first task for my chosen profession is to finish my BA. The next would be pursuing my Masters. Stockton offers a degree in Business Psychology which I am very interested in. Realistically though in order to get into the program I will have to take my GRE, and score well on it, which would be my second task. My third would have to be completing my Masters program and deciding on where to go from there. Like any student solid communication would be essential to succeeding here, between myself and my professors, and other students and group members. As well as the ability of communicating my understanding of the different material my classes cover through the clarity and outcome of my assignments. I think the most important part of communication though would simply be constant communication between myself and the many different administrative offices here at Kean, because communication skills between each other and the individual student is something I feel this University is seriously lacking.
ReplyDeleteHello everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Chris and I am a Junior at Kean University recently transferring from Ocean County College. I graduated from OCC last spring with an Associates of Science in General Studies with a concentration in business. I am now attending Kean University in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. I am still unsure of exactly what area of the marketing field I want to get involved in, but that is also one of the strong points; the marketing field is extremely broad and offers many opportunities.
Also, I am hoping that my computer skills come in handy and prove to be a great asset to help me achieve my goals during and after college. Currently I have had multiple internships with small businesses and other slightly larger companies such as Pool Town. Pool Town had me involved in their marketing portfolio where I was responsible for touching up and manipulating photographs with Adobe Photoshop. One of the small business's I had helped out was a company called "Just Lollipops" and created a website for them to help launch their business. I have also recently created a website for a young professionals networking group in Toms River.
I will most likely be in school for another two years, but plan to be out as soon as possible without overloading myself. I believe that my current skills and the remaining courses i will take will allow me to pursue a multitude of different career opportunities and I intend on making strides toward these while still attending college.
My name is Kerianne Bastone. I am currently working at Houlihan’s restaurant in Brick as a Dining Room Supervisor/Hostess Coordinator. I was hired upon the opening of the restaurant on September 29, 2008 as a hostess. Within the first few months to a year, I consistently excelled over others, and was recognized for my dedication making Employee of the Month. By the sixth month, I was promoted to Hostess Coordinator/Trainer with the responsibility of training new employee’s, assistant to my department manager, and I have the responsibility of assigning servers to their table sections. In order to become as successful as possible, I will need to have exceptional communication skills. As I do have some experience managing, delegating, and handling guest relations, I do believe those are skills that I need to work on. In addition, I am a nervous public speaker and I feel that is something I need to work on most.
ReplyDeleteHey class I realized that I made a mistake with my initial post by only doing a pesonal introduction. This is my continuation on why I believe being able to communicate in business is so important and the 3 things I expect to have to use communication skills for.
ReplyDeleteCommunicating in business is obviously important but it often seems people forget that the important part isn't speaking at people it's gatting them to understand what you're trying to say. One of the biggest failures I've noticed in the jobs I've held are that often times our leaders fail to address problems or concerns in a way that resonates with the individuals they're trying to communicate to. The reason I beleive this class is so important is that it will help me develop a skill set enabaling me to better communicate with the people I work with.
There are really myriad ways I intend to use the skills that I work to develop in this class but for the purpose of this post I'll try and name 3.
1. I've already done a number of presentations for work and I intend to improve my delivery and become more engaging to my audience.
2. I have managed people in the past and would like to develop skills that allow me to communicate my wishes clearly and in a palatable fashion that makes my employees eager to accomplish assigned tasks.
3. I believe communication skills will aid me in seeking out new employment opportunities and presenting myself in the best possible light.
Let me begin by introducing myself, my name is Kerianne Bastone, I’m 21 years old, formerly of Staten Island, NY, and currently living in Toms River for the past 7 years. I am the oldest of three girls.
ReplyDeleteI am currently working at Houlihan’s restaurant in Brick as a Dining Room Supervisor/Hostess Coordinator.
More recently, my department manager transferred to another store, and I took over the host department. In as little as two years, I have accomplished a great deal. I truly enjoy my job and the people I work with. I can honestly say I look forward to going to work each day. As a result, the restaurant business has become an interest of mine and a possible pursuit of career. I consider myself an asset to my company, and my management team is respectful, understanding, and supportive of my goals, decisions, and judgment. My General Manager in particular has always had the utmost amount of faith in me and he continues to show his appreciation of my hard work and dedication.
Academically, I received my Associate’s Degree from OCC in December and am currently attending Kean at Ocean to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.
I plan to own my own business one day which obviously requires a lot of communication. I hopefully would like to open a Cheer/dance gym, but I'm not positive. Effective communication is essential because in order to have this gym run smoothly I need to be able to talk to students and adults properly. I will need to hire and interview employees, and i will be teaching students constantly. I will be doing several presentations to show potential customers around my gym, prices and budgeting, and I have to be persuasive if I want to make money. I am a former shop rite employee if 7 years and I was a book runner for 5 of those years. My tasks included assigning cashiers to their terminals, making sure everyone gets a break and out of work on time, dealing with any problems customers may have, scheduling, and properly fixing registers when broken. I think that by having so much experience with all of that, I have broken out of my shell when it comes to communicating with strangers. Communication was a key asset in order to be successful in that job. I also realized how important it is to respect your employees so they will respect you too.
ReplyDeletePost on quizz: Sept 20, 2010 (not able to find the blog so Im posting here)
ReplyDeleteAfter taking the quiz I scored an even number of 38 which indicates high responsiveness and high assertiveness. On the chart that indicates an expressive style of communicating. A 38 was a little high but still middle ground on assertiveness and responsiveness. I kind of knew that would of been the outcome since I already know my personality but was able to learn how to communicate with the other types of styles, for example, when speaking to a driver, I should be prepared, speak slowly, and not use too many hand gestures. My style is considered a social specialist so working with people is high on my priority list and I believe key to functioning at my best ability. I enjoyed this chapter reading because it focuses on being self aware and this makes a more effective speaker.
Upon taking the quiz I scored a 32 on assertiveness and a 41 on responsiveness thus placing me in the expressive quadrant, expressiveness is characterized as a social specialist, someone that enjoys using communications skills and receiving recognition and attention. I feel like this is an accurate test of quantifying ones personality traits as I do feel that I am an expressive person who enjoys being noticed by others, however, like all self evaluations the results of the test are based on the answers given by the person taking the test thus the results may only be reflective of how the individual taking the assessment feels their personality might be. The text does, however, seem to promote a solid foundation for passing on communication skills and is written in an easy to understand manner that is superior to other communication texts I have encountered.
ReplyDeleteBlog on Quiz(unable to find where to post it so i'm posting it here..)
ReplyDeleteAfter taking the quiz and self analyzing myself, my results categorized me as being expressive. Expressive is a social style characteristic. Someone who is expressive tends to be able to use there communication skills to gain recognition and attention by being highly assertive.
When communicating with an expressive person, increase eye contact, use expressive gestures and talk louder with more intensity. An expressive individual tends to focus on the big picture and tend to avoid specific details. The expressive individual enjoys feeling the receiver’s enthusiasm. An expressive person allows time for fun and joking in a conversation, along with being supportive and provide incentives.
I’ve learned from this exercise that it’s important to remember everyone surrounding me has a different social style. And it’s important on my part to be able to send a message correctly towards the receiver. It’s my responsibility as the sender to be sure that the receiver is decoding my message the way I intended it. It’s also important to keep in mind the level of common noise that is surrounding our conversation; because that could alter the message.
On the Identifying Your Social Style Quiz, I had scored a 39 in being highly assertive and a 48 in being highly responsive. With that being said it ranked me being expressive. Being expressive is a social style characteristic. This particular social style helps you to use your communication skills to gain recognition and attention. Being expressive also makes you enjoy being noticed by others. I feel that this quiz was accurate with my personality because I am assertive and highly responsive. It is very important to be expressive in your career because it will allow people to see where you are coming from and you will stand out from a crowd. Communication skills will be a key role in being successful in your career.
ReplyDeleteIdentifying Your Social Style Quiz: After determining my Assertiveness score, I received a 34, and for my responsiveness score a 49. Scores above 34 indicated high assertiveness/responsiveness, which I wouldn't normally have characterized myself, so this quiz is interesting! As I mapped my social style, I found myself to fall into the expressive social characteristic. This Communication skill is used to gain recognition through expressiveness.
ReplyDeleteSocial Score Quiz: I scored 48 points on assertiveness and 20 points on responsiveness. This classifies me as a driver. It is said that drivers can be cold and harsh, but also practical, effecient and strong willed. I can mostly agree with this asessment. I am certainly practical and do not let small things bother me. I have been told many times I can be cold and harsh. I agree and accept this as I always "tell it like it is." If someone can not handle the hard truth they best not speak to me. I just don't sugarcoat things. I may have to learn how to though to become a better communicator.
ReplyDeleteThe Identifying Your Social Style Quiz determined my social style to be expressive. Characteristics of this social style typically reflect gaining attention and recognition through communication. I was a little surprised at the results, because I am usually not too concerned with being noticed. However gaining recognition for something you have done is always rewarding. Having proper communication abilities will set you apart from others in any career, which is why courses like this are so valuable. Most management positions require an expressive communicator. Expressive communicators are able to maintain many conversations whether it is serious or not. I have learned how important it is to take into consideration others communication styles when sending a message. Also, the sender must consider how the message will be decoded by the receiver. Interferences such as different social styles and background noise can alter a message making the communication unsuccessful.
ReplyDeleteOn the Identifying Your Social Style Quiz I scored a 32 on Assertiveness and a 38 on Responsiveness. This classifies me as having an Expressive Social Style. The book defines an expressive social style as being a social specialist, people with this style are able to use their communication skills to gain recognition and attentionm, and enjoy being noticed by others. I would say this fits my personality because my parents always told me I have "the gift of gab," which I'm not sure is necessarily a good thing or not but when it comes to business I think it can help me more then hurt me. It's easier to naturally be outgoing then have to be quiet and calm at times, rather then be quiet naturally and have to get up and speak and be outgoing. This of course is my opinion on how expressiveness relates to business.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the Social Style Quiz, I scored 33 on the assertiveness scale and 40 in responsiveness. Based on the scores, it seems I am a type of person who is strong, and is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs, while remaining true to her friendly and sweet disposition. LETHAL, though it seems that the technical term is expressive. According to the textbook, with my specific social style I should be able to gain recognition and attention through my communication skills, while immensely enjoying getting noticed. Good to know, and here I was feeling sorry for my poor command of English language, an ever-present accent and a quite nature.
ReplyDeleteOf course, seeing so many contradictions between my score, and the definition such a score should entail, I asked two of my very good friends to rate me using the same quiz. According to both, I still came up on the same expressive style benchmark. Oh well, I guess I will have to get used to my expressive self.
I must admit though, that I found the information provided on communication skills to be used when in presence of analytical, driver and/or amiable personalities very useful. I did find it very interesting how similar the communication requirements for my expressive self would be to socialize with drivers and analytics, such as being organized, prepared and task-focused, yet be as sweet as honey, when talking to an amiable person. Doesn’t anyone besides amiable people appreciate a smile and a kind word? Of course, I know I am oversimplifying the textbook statement, and yet…
At first, I was proud and to have determined that my social style was expressive. Scoring a 36 for for assertiveness (although I only allotted myself a 2 for assertiveness) and an imposing 42 for Responsiveness, I had gotten the good answer. This is exactly what I am, I thought, I am a social expert. Until I realized I wasn't. I may be entirely well-intentioned, I believe, but if I was really a social expert as this test suggests, as it seems the greater part of us got, should we all be at least slightly familiar with each other in the class? Should all of our jobs be just a little more where we would like them to be? Do we all see ourselves of being capable of better. Well, at least I do. I would love to see myself as an expressive social style; I answered honestly, even giving myself the appropriate 2's in appropriate areas. I'm eager to see how the class acts after this, if knowing most of us are supposed to be expressive, will we all make a little more effort to do so? Was that this test's intent?

ReplyDeleteOn the Social Style Quiz, I scored a 32 in assertive, while scoring a 36 for responsiveness. I am assertive at times when making a point I feel confident about, but I am willing to listen to other opinions and consider them. However, where I do disagree with the quiz is when it classifies me under the Expressive Social Style, which states that I have a social style that thrives on being noticed. I do not think that is the case in my personal experiences.

I posted last week but it disappeared...
ReplyDeleteIn the future I aspire to own my own small business, specifically my own fitness center. As a sole proprietor I expect to take on many different responsibilities in ensuring that my business runs smoothly. Three of the most important concerns that I will most likely experience would be solving problems, recruiting new members, and delegating responsibilities among staff. Communication plays a huge role in all three of these tasks and without clear, proper communication there is a strong possibility of failure.
First, in regards to problem solving, communication is vital because you must first clearly identify the problem before taking steps to fix it. Also, brainstorming for a solution and putting that decision into action both require good communication, if you cannot clearly express your ideas or solutions they most likely will be overlooked by others or not put into action properly. While recruiting new members an importance must defiantly be placed on communication because you want to sounds knowledgeable and really be able to sell the customer on our facility. You must be able to clearly go over all benefits, outline the membership guidelines and answer any questions a potential member may have. Finally, good communication is required everyday in delegating daily responsibilities among employees. This entails making sure everyone is on the same page and that everything is completed correctly and in a timely manner.
On the quiz I scored a 35 on assertiveness and a 38 on responsiveness, assigning me an expressive social style. I agree with this assessment because I view myself as both an evenly good listener as well as an important contributor. It was interesting to take the test and see that this is the social personality it matched with me because I believe it fits as I am always around for people to bounce ideas off of and share feelings with yet at the same time I can be decisive and assertive.
ReplyDeleteAfter determining my Assertiveness score, I received 41, and for my responsiveness score was 34. Scores 34 and above indicated high assertiveness and responsiveness. I am not sure about that assertiveness. I think I would fit better with moderate levels of assertiveness but this is just an interesting quiz. When I mapped my social style, I found myself into the expressive social characteristic. This communication skill is to gain recognition through expressiveness and enjoy being notice by others. That is fascinating indeed.
ReplyDeleteAfter taking the quiz in Chapter 2, I realized how assertive and responsive I can to people around me. My score was a 60 which means I am an expressive. I have high assertiveness and high responsiveness which will mean my leadership skills shine extremely well. I eventually want to open my own salon one day and be a great leader and I am so glad that I now know I will be able to do that because I can make my communication skills recognizable and my audience will listen to me and have respect for me. The quiz really expressed to me who I really am and it actually made me pretty excited to graduate college and to move on into my career.
ReplyDeleteThis is the third time I'm writing this because my two previous posts have both disappeared so I'm going to be brief. I scored a 46 on the assertiveness portion and a 32 on the responsiveness. This indicates that I have an expressive personality. I would say this is fairly accurate but i have driver tendencies given my more moderate responsiveness score. I would say the test fairly charted my personality given that it gives a generalized description.
